Slightly off topic but I heard my first Love song on the radio last February. It was "Alone Again Or" and it was on a weekly syndicated radio show in America called "The Acoustic Storm". So cool and almost shocked to hear it come on unexpectedly. Too bad mainstream radio is so terrible most of the time that you can't hear Love or other great groups who you can't pigeonhole into a "format".

You have much joy to discover!! Do you have Bryan MacLean's "ifyoubelivein"?? An absolute must of Love songs/demo tapes when they were first conceived by Bryan...and some that never made it on a Love album!!! A masterpiece!

I actually first heard Love on September 27, 1986 (how weird is that I can remember when I first heard the Doors and Love but can't remember family birthdays!). I only knew of them because they were loosely associated with the Doors. My older sister had an old, scratchy album (Da Capo) that I listened to out of a lack on nothing to do but was immediately grabbed by the music. I got their other two albums shortly there afterward and listened to them alot, but from about 1990 to 2008 I didn't really listen to them anymore.

Fast forward to 2008 and for whatever reason I got the expanded FC on CD. It is one of the oldest cliches' regarding the band but on the 3rd or 4th listening something really sunk in and the band became a listening obsession.

Thus far my collection is limited. I am a bit "old school". To me, Love will always be the 3 albums proper and I was initially reluctant to start with anything that strayed from the original. However, I did start with Four Sail and am in the process of getting all post FC Love, Arthur Lee solo and Bryan's stuff. Kind of like having Xmas several times a year; thanks for your advice. That will definitely be on my list. After the four Elekra albums, if you had to get Love related listening material, where would you start and in what kind of loose order would you pick?

Freed can help me here but I would go next with Out Here! The Blue Thumb release or Love Studio Live which which edits out some of the lesser tracks.

Bryan's "ifyoubelievein" is a must for sure...with his solo acoustic versions of so many great love tracks including OLD MAN & Alone Again Or, Orange Skies....

But I think of all things you must get the two defining LOVE DVD's..Ed will back me here (and look for ED in the credits at the end)......

LOVE STORY (2008)....where you will get to see Arthur, Johnny, Michael, Snoop...maybe the best Music documentary ever made...the story of LOVE with interior shots of The Castle and all the Love haunts...the full story of Love by the living members and some precios footage of the late great Bryan..

Love -The Forever Changes Concert 2003...Arthur's triumphant comeback and full performance of Forever Changes! A remarkable document and fantastic music.

A really nice document also is the Hendrix/Love Acetates....free download--

My Love addiction started with Da Capo also.I remember it playing the whole day when a friend of mine introduced it to me. FC followed soon after that.
I do like Four Sail very much also, some very strong songs and great melodies.

The Love Dvd's are essential just to get to know the band a little better.And we have Johnny and Michael here on the forum, what more do we need!

Minnesota has always been cutting edge...must be those cold winters! Growing up there I can attest to both. Prairie Home Companion was a weekly Saturday Night ritual on PBS television...it was great to see them. Garrison and co.,live onstage from St. Paul! Minnesota is where I learned to love rock in grade school..Cannon Falls. My friend and I used to sing Duke of Earl while slicking our hair back in the restroom.

Public radio is still the way I find many great bands.

Thanks for the advice. I have Einarson's book and Andrew Hulktrans book, and am eagerly awaiting Michael's book to become available hopefully later this year. Einarson was a very good read: impartially presented and well written as well as informative. Hulktrans....the jury is still out. Swimming in psychological waters is provocative but perhaps not the most accurate. If you (or anyone) has read Barney Hoskyns or Dominic Priore's offerings would you recommend them? Do they include much about Love and the Doors?

Have Love Story; always good to have faces and voices to put to the players. I am thinking about the FC concert, but I must ask: was Arthur, at his age then, still capable of pulling off a whole show with the power that was needed for it?

Last question: how would you rate Bryan's post Love music? I've heard "Christian" and "show tune" bandied about alot in regards to him and that has made me a bit reluctant. As I said before, I think that Love proper (Messers Lee, Echols, Forssi, Stuart-Ware, Maclean as well as Snoopy and Tjay) was a magical union. Once the parts were dissembled then the magic is gone, and I would hate to see lesser offerings from those who were great.

I must admit that I do like Four Sail alot as well. The groove on 'August' in particular is infectious.

the FOREVER CHANGES concert 2003 is possibly my favorite live DVD ever! Ed can back me up.

You will not not disappointed!! The audience was in tears seeing Arthur...the UK always did appreciate Love more than the USA!!!

MAGIC!! Baby Lemonade backing Arthur is the next best thing to LOVE 1967!!

I am not a big fan of Bryan's post Love ie the Christian music...but "ifyoubelievein" is mostly 1966-and on with really fine acoustic Love and others demos that SHOULD have made it on a Love album.

If you (or anyone) has read Barney Hoskyns or Dominic Priore's offerings would you recommend them? Do they include much about Love and the Doors?

"Riot on Sunset Strip" covers a lot of ground, and therefore only includes a brief overview of the histories of Love and The Doors. That said, it's a great read if you're interested in the 60's Sunset Strip scene in general, and it's effects and influences. Also, Arthur wrote the forward, and there are some great pics of Love at the Whisky and Hullabaloo.

Michael tells me it keeps getting bumped by the publisher..understandably for more pressing book release dates that have priority...time line.
July may even be optimistic he says, but it WILL be released! He has submitted his new and some never seen photos...hopefully some pix that I did some work on to enhance and psychedelicize will get in too.
