I had a few of questions for you, if you don't mind answering:
When was the last time you saw Jim? Was he in healthy shape before he left for Paris?
When he left for Paris, what were relations like between the members of the band?

When Jim left for Paris he was not in the best of spirits. The Dallas/New Orleans tour had ended any chance of other public performances and that was a blow to Jim since he like to control the audience and walk on thin ice - of course sometimes it broke.
As a result of that tour the guys were a bit alienated - plans for Other Voices - tour and album - were in full swing. The bid project was completion of the LA Woman album and that was the conclusion of their contractual obligation to Elektra.
Jim, knowing that he was on trial, deliberately got drunk and ruiuned the New Orleans performance, one more step toward self destruction. He associated with the guys very little except for the recording sessions. Why - likely the relization that he had little left to contribute to the band after the N.O. failure. His only task would have been as vocals on future recordings - assuming he was there to do them.
He had, as a direct result of his actions, isolated himself from the other guys and effectively terminated the public appearances that they relied on for income.
I have wondered whether he had any hint that they were going to go on without him.
