I saw every Pink Floyd tour between Atom Heart Mother and Momentary Lapse of Taste so I
could tell a lot of Floyd stories. But the one moment that tops them all happened at
the Dark Side of Moon show September 22, 1972 at the Hollywood Bowl. There was a full
moon that night hanging over the audience. A searchlight hidden behind the shell of
the Bowl pointed up at the moon, creating the gorgeous illusion that the moon was
shining down on the stage. Suspended just above and behind the drummer was a huge
ominous jet black disc about 6 feet in diameter. For the first half of the show they
did older Floyd tunes while the disc just hung there and everyone wondered what it was
about.

Then, during "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" there was a slow eerie build-up to a
climax where Roger Waters let loose with a blood-curdling scream. At that exact moment
when he screamed the black disc went "WHOOMP!" and strobed like a million flash bulbs
exploding. It was so bright that the entire audience was momentarily blinded. When
the blindness wore off we could see that they had also set off a shitload of
simultaneous fireworks at once and each time Dave Gilmour strummed his guitar another
rocket would go flying up to the moon in time to the music. Roger Waters is truly a
master of stagecraft and this was the most stunning moment I've ever experienced at a
rock show. When the din finally died down they had an intermission, and came back to
perform Dark Side of The Moon in its entirety as the second half of the show.
